Keynote:  You’ve Removed Administrator Rights, Now What?
Windows IT Pro speaker (Greg Shields)

You already know that handing out Administrator rights simply isn’t a good idea.  With widespread Administrator rights, IT no longer really controls their computers any more. In this session, Concentrated Technology’s (www.ConcentratedTech.com) Greg Shields, a recognized IT industry analyst, presenter, and columnist, as well as a recipient of multiple Microsoft MVP awards, will show you why focusing on “The Administrator” just isn’t enough anymore. Among other things, you will learn:

  • The problem of distributing the right permissions to the right people goes so much further than simply eliminating administrator rights. Applications require them. Some users need them.
  • You need to replace privilege assignment’s traditional focus on people alone with a new focus on who the person is, what they need to do, and when they need to do it.
  • This is technology you can implement today.
  • The desired goal of Least Privilege and how the right solutions create an environment that fulfills its requirements.
  • How your business can implement Least Privilege to finally solve the problem of effective PC lockdown.

9:15 - 10:00 am

Managing Administrator Rights through Viewfinity Privilege Management

Alex Shoykhet, Viewfinity's Director of Product Management, will discuss a flexible approach designed by Viewfinity that addresses the entire scope of how you can lock down your environment without creating unnecessary restrictions on the end user.  We’ll also discuss how Viewfinity helps you manage user privileges for mobile users.
Through the use of automated policy settings, lockdown policies can be applied for multiple dimensions of configurable, logical groupings: departments, applications, end users, connectivity status, time of day and more.
Alex will demonstrate the following Viewfinity features:

  • Privilege Elevation and Management
  • Whitelisting
  • Application Blocking
  • Configurable Compliance Policy management

10:00 - 10:45 am

Managing Administrator Privileges for Mobile and In-Office Users

Martin Silverman, Director of IT for EvensonBest, will share how he is using Viewfinity to manage endpoints for his increasingly mobile workforce.  Specifically he will discuss that by using Viewfinity’s Privilege Management, EvensonBest’s IT group has the ability to create policies that elevate privileges for a custom furniture catalog application so that end users have the appropriate administrative rights to install their own catalog.  Policies are deployed automatically and immediately propagate. The IT group can run reports to confirm which policies were delivered and activated.  The Privilege Management feature also allows users to do administrative tasks that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do, such as hard drive defragmentation, printer installs, ActiveX installs, power setting changes and other selective tasks.

Best Practices for Implementing PC Control Policies

Independent Windows IT Pro speaker (Greg Shields)
Now you know that solutions exist for eliminating Administrator rights.  Now you know that the problems of true PC lockdown can be solved with the right solutions. But owning that solution is one thing, and using it most effectively is quite another. You need smart answers and best practices for putting that solution into use. In this final session, Windows configuration guru Greg Shields will provide real-world lessons that will help you avoid the common mistakes and not-always-obvious pitfalls. Greg will cover, among other things:

  • When to revisit PC control policies, such as during Windows 7 migrations and other desktop refresh projects
  • How to construct a workable project plan for locking down PCs.
  • How best to control user behaviors by role, by requirement, and by endpoint.
  • A set of successful implementations that brought control without impeding users and the business
  • Using privilege management to gain more control over your desktop environment which should lead to a decrease in IT support costs.
  • Six best practices for implementing PC control policies to successfully get your business to the end state of complete control, including embracing whitelisting for security and control and analyzing help desk tickets to find problem apps and their configurations.
